Today is the eve of Sant Joan, the Catalan festival for midsummer’s eve. The fireworks stands are up throughout the city and the nights have been alive this week with the popping of “bangers” by all the local children. According to the city’s website, the three symbols of Sant Joan are herbs, water and fire. The last two are celebrated by masses of people swarming the beaches to enjoy picnics, fires and fireworks, and if they make it long enough, a sunrise dip in the sea. True to Spanish form the safety regulations are somewhat slack (ie seemingly non-existent) so hopefully I’ll make it home without having seen a 5 year old blow off a thumb or having had firecrackers launched at my head. Wish me luck!
